ITINERARY:
Day 1:
Yellow
Waters Wetlands
Turning
off the Stuart Highway, we travel along the Arnhem Highway
passing the major river systems and wetland regions into Kakadu
National Park. After crossing the South Alligator River
we begin to explore the World Heritage Area of Ubirr Rock
where we climb up through the ancient Aboriginal rock
art galleries to the lookout for the famous view over surrounding
wetlands. We then visit the Bowali Visitor Centre with
informative displays, and continue to Cooinda to join Kakadu’s
fabled Yellow Waters Wetland Cruise to experience the
beauty of the Kakadu wetlands.
Accommodation: Cooinda – choice of hotel or tented
(L)
Day
2:
Nourlangie
Rock
The morning is spent in the Nourlangie Rock region
and Anbangbang Billabong which includes spectacular
Arnhem Land Escarpment views, ancient Aboriginal occupation
sites and pristine freshwater environs. After lunch venture
off the beaten track to Barramundi Gorge, where a 2km
return walk through paperbark forest leads to a small waterfall
and clear plunge pool with an opportunity for a swim. This
walk is graded moderate with difficult areas requiring some
agility in rougher parts of the track. (CB, L)
Accommodation: Cooinda – choice of hotel or tented
Day
3:
Jim
Jim and Twin Falls
A truly enjoyable day exploring the majestic beauty of Jim
Jim and Twin Falls. Access to Jim Jim Gorge is
by a 900 metre walk over rocks. Active people have no problems.
The falls may not flow throughout the dry season, but if there
has been a reasonable wet season they will still be running
up until late August and the plunge pool at the base of Jim
Jim provides the opportunity for a welcome swim throughout
the year. The surrounding gorges are a spectacle to behold
as the rock colours continuously change with the suns’ position.
Access to Twin Falls is by a short easy stroll to the edge
of the stream and then a short boat trip up the gorge area
to the beach at the base of these beautiful falls, with time
to relax in the spectacular scenery that you are bound to
remember for a long time.Access to Jim Jim / Twin Falls requires
the ability to walk over rough terrain. (CB, L)
Accommodation: Jabiru – choice of hotel or cabin
Day
4:
Arnhem
Land
Today we depart from Jabiru and visit remote, mysterious and
restricted areas of Kakadu and Arnhem Land. Arnhem Land
is Aboriginal land – a unique area where Aboriginal people
live a lifestyle more closely linked to their true culture
and heritage. This 4WD tour will visit Mikinj Valley, a
superbly scenic area of sandstone outcrops and escarpments,
forest, floodplains and billabongs. This is an area where
Aboriginals have lived for thousands of years and by arrangement
with an co-operation of the Manilakarr people, this unique
tour will allow you to see places inaccessible to most. Hear
of traditional land ownership, learn of bush skills, hunting,
food gathering and preparation (bush tucker), view Aboriginal
art in its natural state – no fences or barriers, or other
groups … just art as it was created many years ago. Return
to Jabiru late afternoon where you will be met by guide for
transfer to Darwin, stopping briefly at the Bark Hut Inn for
a meal stop (own cost) arrive
Darwin at approximately 9.30pm.
