ITINERARY: A
day tour to Bathurst Island provides a unique and rare opportunity
to experience a modern day Aboriginal community and learn
about the history and the culture of the Tiwi People from
a local residents perspective.
Day 1:
A day tour to Bathurst Island provides a unique and rare opportunity
to experience a modern day Aboriginal community and learn
about the history and the culture of the Tiwi People from
a local residents perspective.
Make
your way to the General Aviation Terminal, Darwin Airport
by 7.30am (own expense).
Depart
at 8.00am for the 30 minute flight to Bathurst Island to join
a guided journey through the modern day Aboriginal community
of Nguiu.
Visit
the museum with its displays of traditional art and depictions
of the Tiwi Dreamtime stories and the Early Mission Precinct
with its unique Tiwi style Catholic Church.
Visit
the Art Centres for the opportunity to purchase Tiwi art at
island prices. A highlight of the day is spending time with
the Tiwi ladies and our Guides enjoying billy tea and damper.
Witness
traditional totem dances and a smoking ceremony and hear the
meaning behind them. Later, if conditions permit, visit a
local waterhole for a swim.
Visit
a Tiwi burial site and learn about some of the complex rituals
associated with the Pukamani poles (Burial Poles).
The
tour departs from Direct Air at the General Aviation Terminal.
