KAKADU

Odyssey Safaris operate tours throughout northern Australia including the World Heritage Listed Kakadu National Park. Our specialty is to show our clients more of the remote ares of Kakadu, the hidden secrets away from the madding crowds.

Odyssey is fortunate to have a number of special licenses to operate in some of the more remote areas of the park. Places such as Jarrangbarnmi (Koolpin Gorge ) and Bilbilkmi (Graveside Gorge) are just two of the places very few people get to see unless traveling with a specialists tour operator such as Odyssey Safaris. In both of these areas access is by 4WD only. Whilst visiting these places activities will include moderate grade bush walking swimming and bird watching. You will be guided by an experienced naturalist guide who will explain to you the mysteries of this wondrous land.

Of course visiting areas such as these requires a little more time. You can't rush into and out of these places, you have to take your time and immerse yourself into experience. You will be revitalized and enlightened.

With Odyssey Safaris you can visit Kakadu National Park on any of our Scheduled Departures of 3 - 7 days duration or we can tailor the perfect private safari (the Odyssey Classic) for you and your traveling companions

Jim Jim Falls

Jim Jim Falls is approximately 2 hours drive from Odyssey's Mardukal camp ground. The first 20 kilometers is on a paved road followed by 50 kilometers of rough formed track, followed by 10 kilometers of very slow, low range 4WD track. After arrival at the car parking area there is a walk of some 15 minutes to the opening of the gorge. The walk to the plunge pool and falls is approximately another 45 minutes over rough terrain.

The road to Jim Jim falls usually opens in June and remains open till mid December depending on rainfall. The falls flow depending on the amount of Wet Season rains and have usually decreased to a trickle by late August. Never the less whether flowing or not the gorge area is most spectacular. There have been occasional occurrences of estuarine crocodiles in the gorge area after the Wet season. For this reason we do not recommend swimming other than in the plunge pool at the base of the falls. The water here is crystal clear and very very deep. Due to the limited amount of sun light in the gorge the plunge pool is always quite cold.

Twin Falls

Twin falls is a further 12 kilometers on from Jim Jim Falls, access is dependent on the track conditions and depth of water at Jim Jim Creek. The window of opportunity for access to Twin Falls is generally 2 - 4 weeks shorter than that for Jim Jim and the beginning and end of the season.

After arrival at the car park it is a walk of 5 minutes to the opening of Twin Falls Gorge.

Access to the falls is only possible by water from the opening of the gorge and is a distance of approximately 1.5 kilometers. For this reason it is not recommended for NON SWIMMERS.

On tour we use flotation devices such as small surf boards or air mattresses to assist in getting to the falls.

JARRANGBARNMI

(Koolpin Gorge)

Koolpin Gorge in the southern reaches of Kakadu is a restricted access area. Odyssey safaris is fortunate to be one of just 3 commercial tour operators who hold licenses to operate in the area. Access to the area is restricted to no more than 40 people at a time. Commercial tour operators visit the area on a roster basis.

It is a truly spectacular part of Kakadu known by some as the "Jewel in the Crown of Kakadu", activities include bush walking, swimming and bird watching. This area is known by the Jawoyn traditional owners as the "sickness country".

It is of particular significance to the Jawoyn people and is the dreaming place of the mythical Jaywon creator figure "Bulla". Bullas's spirit remains in many caves in the area. These caves are most sacred areas and are not to be disturbed. Any disturbance to these "Bulla sites" can result in cataclysmic repercussions as Bulla becomes aggravated.

Your guide will explain in detail the story of Bulla and point out the various Bulla sites from a distance. When walking in the area it is important to obey any signs declaring "sacred sites" and to remain in the presence of your guide at all times. We are fortunate to be allowed into such a special place and must respect the wishes of the traditional owners.
