Getting
There:
For both 4WD and 2WD vehicles, you will meet your guide at
Monsoon Cafe in Litchfield National Park. Monsoon Cafe is
located about 4Km past the Wangi Falls turnoff as you make
your way from Batchelor. For those leaving their 2WD vehicle
for the night, speak to the hosts at Monsoon Cafe, they will
tell you where the best place to park is. You should be ready
for departure from Monsoon Cafe at 4:00pm For those driving
4WD vehicles, the journey is about 10km, mostly along a 4WD
track and you will encounter a number of creek crossings,
at least one which requires your special attention. Along
the narrow tracks you will encounter corrugations, potholes
& sandy conditions. Make sure sure you have 4WD engaged throughout
the journey after you leave the tar road, take care and drive
slowly following the Odyssey escort vehicle.
Minjungari
Safari Camp: Minjungari
(pronounced Min-joon-yaree) is located within Litchfield National
Park which is approximately 12 degrees south of the equator
and is subject to the North West monsoon which brings the
majority of the rainfall in the months from December to March.
The average daily maximum temperature varies from 31 degrees
Celsius in July to around 38¼ C in the hotter months, October/December.
Overnight minimums are as low at 10¼C in July and as high
as 28¼ C in the hotter months. Much of Litchfield was once
inhabited by the Werat, Kungarakanj, Maranugu and Warai people
who are the traditional owners of the area. The name of Odyssey's
safari camp, Minjungari, means Blue Water Lily in the Kungarakanj
language. On arrival you will be shown to your accommodation
and shown the location of the showers and toilets and how
they operate. Minjungari is a bush camp and there are many
wild animals around the camp – most are harmless to you but
you must be careful to always wear closed footwear around
the camp and not to venture too close to the edge of the water
as there is a large estuarine crocodile living in the billabong.
Please keep your tent closed at all times to reduce the risk
of unwanted insects and other small creatures coming into
visit! Your host can give you more information about what
animals, large and small, that you might encounter during
your stay. The birdlife at Minjungari can be simply stunning.
The break of dawn here is an experience not to be missed and
guided dawn walks will be offered by your Host.
Meals:
Meals
will be served in the dining tent at fixed times which will
depend upon time of year and other factors. Normally dinner
will be served between 19:00 and 19:30, breakfast betwen 07:30
and 08:00. The actual meal times during your visit will be
advised to you by your Host. Please ask if you are uncertain.
If you have any special dietary requirements please advise
us at the time of booking – to tell us when you arrive is
too late. We do not provide alcoholic drinks at the camp.
If you wish to have wine or other drinks with your dinner
please purchase it and bring it with you. When selecting your
drinks please bear in mind that we will have limitations on
space in the ice box.
Departure
Arrangements: The
Escort Vehicle leaves camp at 10:00 and will lead you back
to the camp gate some 3 kilometres away. From there you will
easily find your way to your next destination in Litchfield
or beyond. Those choosing to stay more than one night will
need to make arrangements with the camp hosts if they wish
to leave or return at times other than the standard arrival
and departure times. Your host will endeavour to accomodate
your wishes but some flexibility may be required.

LITCHFIELD
SAFARI CAMP Nightly Mid April to November 2008
Litchfield
National Park covers an area of 146,000 hectares and is just
2 hours drive south of Darwin. It is the ideal place to spend
time exploring the many beautiful waterfalls, pioneering history
and the natural wonders like the magnetic termite mounds.
Our Safari Camp is situated in a remote 4WD area of the wilderness
with the only disturbance being the sounds of the bush.
Lying
between the latitudes 12 degrees south to 13 degrees south
it is subject to the North West monsoon which brings the majority
of the rainfall in the months from December to March. The
average daily maximum temperature varies from 31 degrees Celsius
in July to around 35 C in the hotter months, October/December.
Overnight minimums are around 15 C in July and 24 C in the
hotter months.
This area
was once inhabited by the Werat, Kungarakanj, Maranugu and
Warai people who are the traditional owners of the area.
There
is a central eroded sandstone (Middle Proterozoic) plateau
from which the perennial waterfalls flow down into the major
rivers, the Finniss and the Reynolds. The predominant flora
is open Eucalypt forest but there are fascinating swamp areas
and spectacular gully monsoonal rainforests along the perennial
streams. A wide variety of native animals are present, the
largest in the area being the Antelopine Wallaroo and, in
some waterways, the Estuarine Crocodile. The unique “Magnetic”
Termite mounds are found here and are a spectacular sight
to see.
Meet your
Odyssey site guide at Monsoon Café (located within the Litchfield
Tourist Precinct on Litchfield Park Rd) at 15:45. If you are
traveling in a two-wheel-drive vehicle, it will be left overnight
in the car park at Monsoon Café. Four-wheel-drive vehicles
will follow the site guide into camp along the Reynold’s River
4WD track. Please ensure that 4WD is engaged throughout the
whole trip. You will travel in convoy for about 10km where
you will encounter creek crossings, sandy tracks and rough
terrain. After a days touring enjoy a comfortable relaxed
night around the campfire with like minded spirited travellers.
The Camp is equipped with locally designed Safari Tents, which
are perfect for our tropical climate. The walls are made of
canvas and all have insect screening, creating a comfortable
spacious cool design. Tents have single beds, fans and lighting
(limited). All linen is supplied. Your Camp Host will prepare
a delicious evening meal and hearty breakfast for the kitchen
and open fire. You will awake to a bush chorus of birds and
other animals. Take an early morning guided hike around the
billabong before enjoying a scrumptious full breakfast cooked
on the open fire. You will then be escorted/transferred back
to Monsoon Café for your onward journey.
Please
note special diets can be catered for. Please let us know
at the time of booking.
