Our 3 Day Kakadu
/ Litchfield Adventure gives those short on time
a chance to see many of the highlights of Kakadu
National Park and Litchfield National Park. You'll
get to see Crocodiles leaping out of the water,
visit beautiful waterholes for swimming and relaxing,
visit highly significant Aboriginal art sites
as well as enjoy fantastic views over the surrounding
countryside from many of the lookouts we frequent.
At this time of
year you can experience Kakadu and Litchfield
as they undergo a major transformation - from
dry and empty watercourses after 7 months with
little rain, to a bounty of life emerging after
wild lightening storms bring much needed rain.
Dry riverbeds begin to flow bringing dormant waterfalls
to life that then fill the floodplains. The bush
turns lush green and the wildlife becomes active
with plenty of food on offer (not you guys hopefully).
We visit the best
destinations accessible at this time of year with
plenty of hiking, swimming and exploring the wonders
of the region. We'll get you away from the crowds
and into the more isolated areas of Kakadu and
Litchfield, including Special Permit areas. It's
too humid from the rain at this time of year so
from December to March we camp at our permanent
camp which is a dry, mosquito proof bush hut with
air-conditioned sleeping areas*.

Day
1: - Kakadu Tour
Our 2
day Kakadu adventure tour begins after picking you up from
your accommodation at 6.30am and heading to the Adelaide River
for a one hour boat cruise, exclusively for our groups. The
Adelaide River is a famous area in the Northern Territory
because of the Jumping Crocodile Cruises that operate here.
Watch from the safety of the boat as large saltwater crocodiles
leap out of the water up to half their body length. This is
a truly amazing sight.
Heading
east along the Arnhem Highway, we enter Kakadu National Park
which is simply spectacular at this time of year. To get you
up to speed on the area, you can take a walk around the Bowali
Visitor Centre which contains a wealth of information about
the flora, fauna, culture, management and history of Kakadu
National Park.
An insight
into Aboriginal cultural awaits you at Nourlangie Rock, one
of the most famous rock art and cultural sites in the world.
The concentration of rock art in this area is magnificent,
depicting mainly wildlife and Dreamtime stories and ranging
in age from 40 to 20,000 years old.
A 1.5km
loop walk takes you through an ancient Aboriginal shelter
and past several outstanding Aboriginal art sites. Listen
to stories about Aboriginal lifestyle and culture from your
guide on the way around this culturally significant destination.
From Narwurlandja lookout you can enjoy magnificent views
over Kakadu and across to the Arnhem Land Escarpment on its
Eastern boundary.
The many
lookouts over Kakadu we visit are great spots at this time
of year for watching storms. The Northern Territory lays claim
to receiving the most electrical activity in the world so
you can frequently watch lightning storms travelling across
the sky which are just awesome.
Tonight
you can have a go at playing the didgeridoo around the campfire
after a day full of awesome scenery, Aboriginal art sites,
crocodiles, birds and adventure.
Meal: Lunch, Dinner
Camp: Mary River - Southern Kakadu - Permanent Campsite
with air-conditioned accommodation*.
Walks: 4km's
Day
2: - Kakadu Tour
The southern
end of Kakadu has some of the most spectacular scenery in
the park and today we spend the whole day in the area. Waterfalls
that have been dry for 7 months are now flowing, creating
new destinations to visit and crystal clear rock pools for
swimming. We follow some of the many Yirmikmik walking tracks
which allow us to "get away from the crowds" and do plenty
of hiking, exploring and swimming. These walks encompass Kurrundie
Falls, Motorcar Falls and Boulder Creek.
Gunlom
is another spectacular waterfall in this area that we also
visit if it is accessible. A short walk takes us to a huge
clear plunge pool at the base of a 60 metre waterfall and
after a steep climb to the top of the waterfall, there are
breathtaking views over southern Kakadu.
Wilderness
4WD Adventures has a Special Permit to visit a restricted
area called Moline Rockhole situated only 10 minutes from
our permanent campsite. This area has picturesque cascades
that descend to a small waterfall with a clear plunge pool
at the base. After a nice and easy short walk you can cool
down after a big day before we start heading back to Darwin
as the sun sets. Leave your tour with memories of spectacular
scenery, magnificent waterfalls and loads of fun with a group
of great people.
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: your Darwin hostel/hotel (own expense)
Walking: 10km's
Day
3 - Litchfield Tour
We resume
our tour next morning with pickup from your accommodation
at 6:30am and then heading directly to Litchfield National
Park. Our first stop for the day is at the picturesque Florence
Falls for a refreshing swim after completing a short walk
through the surrounding monsoon rainforest. Most of the waterfalls
and walks in Litchfield are close by which means that there
are no long hauls in the vehicle for the rest of the day.
You can
swim in the crystal clear rock pools of Buley Rockholes before
a short drive to the famous Wangi Falls for another quick
swim. We then scoot off to another Special Permit area called
Tolmer Falls where the viewing platform provides you with
the perfect location to watch the falls descending from a
narrow gorge into a beautiful plunge pool. We hold a Special
Permit that allows us access to the Upper Tolmer Falls area,
so after a scenic bushwalk you can swim in a secluded location
at the top of the Falls (when accessible).
As we
leave Litchfield National Park we pass by floodplains scattered
with hundreds of Meridian Termite Mounds and make a brief
stop to learn more about the inhabitants of these amazing
structures. We return to Darwin after a day full of swimming,
adventure and great scenery.
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Walking: 4km's
