A taste of the
Kimberley including the Bungle Bungles. You can't
go between Broome and Darwin without experiencing
the magic of the Kimberley region in far North
Western Australia. It is one of the world's last
frontiers of ancient pristine landscapes and true
Australian wilderness. It encompasses everything
from rainforests, magnificent gorges and waterfalls,
rugged and unique ranges as well as tidal flats.
Our 6 Day Kimberley Escape takes you on a 6 day
4WD adventure from Broome to Darwin giving you
a juicy sampling of this very special part of
Australia. Hike into beautiful waterfalls and
gorges, sleep under the stars and relax around
the campfire at night.
We spend a full
day exploring around Purnululu National Park,
home of the world famous Bungle Bungles. We also
visit the million acre El Questro Station where
we can explore parts of the station and swim in
the crystal clear waters of Emma Gorge, El Questro
Gorge, Amalia Gorge and also relax in the thermal
pools of Zebedee Hot Springs. To ensure you get
your dose of adventure, we also embark on some
caving at Tunnel Creek, a 750 metre long cave
system complete with bats. Our 6 Day 4WD Kimberley
tour is a reasonably fast paced tour so if you
have more time we do offer a 9 Day Kimberley Challenge
which travels to Darwin along the Gibb River Road
and has heaps more on the itinerary. But if you're
tight on time or budget but know you just can't
let the opportunity of seeing the Kimberley go
by, then our Kimberley Escape is a great way to
get a feel for the region.

DAY
1: - Kimberley Tour
Pick up
from your accommodation starts at 6:30am before we hit the
road on our adventure to Darwin. Our first stop for the day
is to take in some great scenery as we hike along the river's
edge of Windjana Gorge. The huge, vertical cliffs stretching
out on either side of the gorge are made from an ancient reef
that the Lennard River has cut a gorge through. The area is
always plentiful with bird life as well the chance to have
a look at some freshwater crocodiles which are usually easily
found.
Next it's
time to do a bit of caving as we take a walk through Tunnel
Creek. This 750 metre long cave system requires you to wear
bathers and carry a torch if you wish to fully explore the
area. It is an unforgettable experience walking through icy
cold water, in the dark through a huge cave with its fair
share of bats flying around.
From here
we make our way to our campsite where you can enjoy your first
evening in the unspoilt Kimberley wilderness.
Meals:
Lunch, Dinner
Camp: Bush Camp
Walking: 3km
DAY
2: - Kimberley Tour
Today
we head out to the Great Northern Highway where you can enjoy
a smooth ride via the sealed highway through Fitzroy Crossing
and Halls Creek before arriving at our turn off to the Bungle
Bungles just before we reach Turkey Creek. This is real 4WD
country with bulldust, creeks and jagged rocks making it a
two hour drive to do the 50km stretch.
The Bungle
Bungle Ranges consist of 200 - 400 metre high rounded beehive-shaped
domes with horizontal coloured bands of orange, black and
grey. Their distinctive shapes have been produced over some
350 million years from the formation and uplift of a sandstone
plateau through to erosion eating away at the rock with only
the harder sandstone remaining. These formations can only
be described as spectacular.
In the
afternoon we head over to the northern side of the Bungles
and visit Echidna Chasm, a long narrow gorge with 150 metre
high sheer rock faces which you can walk between for a considerable
distance. We go to a nearby lookout and as the sun sets you
can watch the magnificent striped domes of the Bungles changing
color - totally awesome. Tonight you can enjoy a candlelit
dinner in the heart of the Kimberley then have a go at playing
the didgeridoo.
Meals:
Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Camp: Bungle Bungles - Walardi Campsite
Walking: 2km
DAY
3: - Kimberley Tour
Today
we spend the morning exploring around the southern end of
the Bungles where you'll get the opportunity to take an optional
helicopter flight over the area (own expense). The first stop
is a spectacular "Domes Walk" amongst the colourfully banded
domes as we hike through Piccaninny Creek. Enjoy a magnificent
view from the lookout in this area then take an easy hike
that leads to the pool at the base of Cathedral Gorge.
This afternoon
we make our way back to the highway and up towards Kununurra
where we camp the night at the Wuggabun Aboriginal Community.
There is a swimming area in the campground here and also a
hike that leads to a small waterfall where you can cool down.
The hike offers beautiful views from a lookout over the Saw
Ranges and after setting up camp this evening you can spend
some time stargazing under the southern skies.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Camp: Wuggabun Aboriginal Community
Walking: 5 km's
DAY
4: - Kimberley Tour
This morning
we make our way back onto the Gibb River Road to reach El
Questro Station. One of the magnificent gorges on El Questro
station is Emma Gorge which features great scenery and cool,
clear water. Take some time exploring Emma Gorge and enjoy
swimming in the plunge pool before we take a scenic drive
along the Cockburn Ranges as we make our way to the magnificent
El Questro Gorge. This would have to be the most beautiful
Gorge on El Questro Station and has a challenging hike to
reach the end of the Gorge.
Spend
the afternoon inspired by magnificent scenery as we walk up
the Gorge where you can refresh yourself in crystal clear
rock pools along the way. El Questro Station is a 1 million
acre working cattle station that is full of Kimberley character
and tonight we camp on the side of the Pentecoste River in
the heart of the region. The evening is open to wildlife spotting,
playing didgeridoo or just relaxing - the choice is yours.
Meals:
Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Camp: El Questro Station
Walking: 11km
DAY
5: - Kimberley Tour
What better
way to start the day than by relaxing in a series of thermal
pools known as Zebedee Hot Springs. The hot springs are located
in a picturesque surrounding of palms and the water temperature
is perfect to just laze about and enjoy the scenery around
you. Next we go for a hike along Amalia Gorge which takes
us to a beautiful waterfall with a large plunge pool for swimming,
another of El Questro Stations jewels that you are going to
love. After spending the morning at El Questro Station we
take you to look at some of the famous Kimberley Rock Art
where you can get an insight into the local Aboriginal lifestyle
and culture. We stop at Ivanhoe Crossing for lunch and then
on into Kununurra before crossing into the Northern Territory
on our way to Timber Creek for our overnight camp.
Meals:
Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Camp: Timber Creek
Walking: 5km
DAY
6: - Kimberley Tour
We stop
in at Katherine this morning for a short break on the way
through to Edith Falls . Enjoy a swim in the cool water here
and take a hike to the upper pools as we have about 3 hours
exploring this area along with a relaxing lunch. From here
it's a 2.5 hour drive through to Darwin arriving at your accommodation
in the early evening.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Walking: 4km
