Tour Background:

Owen Springs Reserve of 1780 square kilometres, was formerly part of Owen Springs Cattle Station. It was acquired by the Northern territory Government in 2000 and opened in 2003 for public enjoyment. The area protected within the reserve is steeped in Territory history. The main access track through the Reserve clearly follows John McDouall Stuart’s route through the MacDonnell Ranges. His explorations between 1860 and 1862 opened Central Australia to white settlement. On the 11th April 1860 Stuart, William Kekwick and Benjamin Head travelled along the Hugh River where they discovered a large waterhole that Stuart named Owen Springs.

Rainbow Valley is a phenomena of Mother Nature. The cliffs and bluffs of the sandstone wall are facing westward. Hence, particularly at sunset the radiance of the setting sun illuminates the cliff face offering a spectacular photo opportunity and a breathtaking experience.
