Darwin
to Cairns
(Cairns to Darwin is opposite of itinerary shown)
DAY
1: Picked up from your accommodation at 7am
we travel south to Nitmiluk National Park. Here you
will have the chance to cruise* the famous Katherine
Gorge or hire* a canoe and paddle at your own leisure.
Then it’s on to Mataranka to relax in the natural
thermal pools surrounded by paper bark and palm forest
before setting up camp at Elsey National Park alongside
the serene Roper river.
DAY
2: Today we head east to Roper Bar then leave
the bitumen behind and follow the seldom visited part
of the Gulf of Carpentaria through the isolated and
rugged Limmen National Park. We then spend time exploring
the many lagoons for birdlife and trek amongst the spectacular
sandstone formations of the Southern Lost City, some
of the oldest formations on earth. Our camp tonight
will be at Lorella Springs, a working cattle station
on 1million acres. Here you can relax in their natural
thermal spa.
DAY
3: Enjoy a relaxed morning before we head off
to Caranbirini Conservation Park for a walk to look
at aboriginal art sites and sandstone spires. Then onto
Borroloola, infamous frontier town, visit a pioneering
museum then travel through Gulf Savannah country crossing
many creeks and rivers before setting up camp with the
possibility of catching a barramundi or crab for dinner
DAY
4: Say goodbye to the Northern Territory as
we cross the border into Queensland, view aboriginal
rock art and visit Hell's Gate. Travelling through cattle
stations we arrive at Boodjamulla National Park (Lawn
Hill) with its spring fed emerald waters and lush vegetation
- this is an oasis teaming with diverse wildlife. Here
you can hire a canoe* and venture into the heart of
the gorge or hike one of the many tracks for a spectacular
panoramic view. This is where we set up camp for another
night under the stars.
DAY
5: Travelling south we visit Riversleigh, a
world heritage listed site which is one of the most
significant fossil deposits in the world, with fossils
dating back 20 Million years. Stopping at Gregory Downs
Hotel for a cool drink before we set up camp on the
perennial Gregory River.
DAY
6: On to Burketown for a possible glimpse of
the 'Morning Glory' cloud formation and massive tidal
flats of the gulf before passing through the 'Plains
of Promise'. After crossing Leichardt Falls we visit
the explorers, Burke and Wills memorial, stop at the
quirky 'Purple' Pub at Normanton and admire 'Krys'”
a replica of an 8.63m crocodile (worlds largest ever
captured). Then onto historic Croydon which was once
a flourishing gold mining town in the 1880's.
DAY
7: Today we visit Georgetown, renowned for
its semi precious gem stones, visit Tallaroo Hot Springs
then stop at Undarra Volcanic NP where you can go on
a conducted tour* to explore the worlds largest and
longest lava tubes. Then we pass through the fertile
Atherton tablelands where we end our outback experience
and enter the lush tropical rainforests of the east
coast and great coral reefs of Cairns. Now you can say
you traversed one of the Great tracks of Australia,
the Savannah Way!
