ITINERARY

Why we love this trip
•Discover the best of southern and central Australia on an epic road trip. Like a true Australian drover, spend your nights camping in a swag under the southern sky
• Follow the route of the old Overland Telegraph line to the town of William Creek, situated on the largest cattle station in the world
• The opal-mining outpost of Coober Pedy is like no other place in Australia, as scorching daytime temperatures have driven the town’s few residents to live underground. 'Noodle' for opals, hang out with some rescued joeys and spend the night in a subterranean bunker
• See the best of Australia’s iconic Red Centre on guided walks around Uluru, Kings Canyon and the ancient red domes of Kata Tjuja.
• The outback landscape is sacred to the local Aboriginal people. Learn about their special connection to the land on guided walks

Is this trip right for you?
• This trip is activity based, and tailored to enable you to experience these extensive wildlife encounters.

Day 1: Adelaide to Port Lincoln
Adelaide's one of those cities that has a little bit of something for everyone: award-winning gardens, 19th century churches, fresh seafood and enough good wines and wine bars to send a sommelier giddy. Think about arriving in town a day or two before kick-off to see everything Adelaide has to offer. We've got an early start day, leaving Adelaide at 7:00am for the drive to the Eyre Peninsula via Port Augusta and Whyalla. We'll be honest - there's not a whole lot to see on the drive (unless endless horizons and scrubby bushland float your boat), so load up the Kindle or charge up the iPod for some digital entertainment. After arriving in Port Lincoln and checking into our accommodation, head to Mikkira Station for a wander around the grounds in search of koalas and native Port Lincoln parrots. (L/D)

Day 2: Whalers Way Conservation Park/Port Lincoln National Park (Optional Shark diving day tour)
Enjoy a free day taking advantage of the range of activities on offer in Port Lincoln. Landlubbers may choose to walk the ten-kilometre trail from North Shields to Port Lincoln (or the shorter Parnkalla Trail along the coastline), while thrill-seekers might prefer cruising out to the Neptune Islands to go cage diving and come face-to-face with a Great White shark (at own expense). FYI, the sharks here mean business: so much so that the producers of JAWS shot various scenes on the nearby (and classically Aussie-named) Dangerous Reef. You'll be thanking your lucky stars for that cage.

Guest's board at the Marina Hotel pontoon to the smell of hot coffee made fresh on-board. After an introduction and safety briefing from the skipper of the day, we throw off the ropes and set off for the Neptune Islands. Breakfast is served shortly after departure.

Sit back, relax and enjoy your journey we have a 2 ½ hour cruise and we are often accompanied by pods of dolphins and even the odd whale, in season. During the trip, the friendly crew will provide you with information about the fishing industries, the 'local area' and the marine life. 'Take in the spectacular coastal scenery of lower Spencer Gulf and the islands of Thorny Passage. In season, you can try your luck at catching a Southern Bluefin Tuna.

On arrival at the Islands the skipper gets the boat up as close to the land as he can so you can get the best views and the best photos of the New Zealand Fur Seal colony. The exact dive location for the day is chosen and it's time to drop anchor. The ocean surrounding the Neptune Islands is crystal clear which makes for ideal viewing of the Great White Sharks.

Groups enter our new spacious cage 6 at a time. This way you get some welcome human company and you still get plenty of room for prime shark viewing. Once the sharks arrive, each group will have the opportunity to spend about 45 minutes in the cage, face to face with the amazing Great White Shark. Please note that time in the cage can vary and will depend on shark activity and weather on the day.

Even when you're not in the water, you don't miss out - the action from the very spacious upper and lower decks is fantastic so make sure you keep your camera ready for that once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity. We have our own cameras mounted on the shark cage so you can also sit in the comfort of our saloon and watch the underwater action live-streaming.

Those not wishing to be quite so extreme, have a choice of free activities to choose from. Walk the Investigator trail from North Shields back to Port Lincoln 10km, Parnkalla trail from Billy lights back to Makybe Diva statue on the fore shore(5km), Railway museum (open 2-4pm) or the Art gallery at the Nautilus Theatre. (B/L/D)

Day 3: Hopkins Island (Swimming with Sea Lions) to Adelaide
From creatures of the deep to puppies of the sea. Today you have the option of cruising out to Hopkins Island and taking part in one of Australia's many unique wildlife experiences: swimming with sea lions. This half-day adventure takes us to a friendly community of sea lions where you can swim, snorkel, paddle and splash about in the company of these inquisitive animals. Those preferring to stay on dry land can spend the day in Port Lincoln, perhaps strolling the foreshore or indulging in a seafood lunch. In the afternoon, return to Adelaide where your wildlife adventure wraps up. (B/L)
