FACT SHEET
- TRIP NOTES
THE AREA (Katherine Region)
Katherine: 324 kilometres
south of Darwin, Northern Territory. The majority of our 4WD
tours take place in the Katherine Region, including Elsey
National Park, Kakadu National Park & Gregory National
Park. The areas that we travel through are quite remote and
represent a real opportunity for an environmental experience.
We try our hardest to stay away from the major tourist crowds
(in order to see some of the attractions you do have to grin
and bear it, however!)
The local flora and fauna
is prolific (sometimes shy) and the scenery is varied and
beautiful. The diversity of the landscape is high, with low
wetland areas spreading out across the many floodplains enabling
the birdlife to nest, feed and survive the long 'Dry Season'.
The Katherine Region is a
terrific place to visit and base your Northern Territory experience
from. We are close to The Kimberley, Gregory National Park,
Elsey National Park, Manyallaluk, Kakadu Heritage Area and
of course, right on our doorstep, is the magnificent Katherine/Flora/Daly
River System.
How Much?
Tour Cost is above
The Vehicle
We use a Toyota Landcruiser
Troop Carrier (with forward facing coach seats) which carries
6 passengers. This is a very comfortable vehicle with plenty
of clearance, so we can still take you to those 'off the beaten
track'; places. Our Touring Partner 'Travel North’,
use comfortably outfitted 20 seat 'Coaster Buses’, which
are ideal for the sealed road touring aspects of the tour.
Where We Stop
On the river we have no designated
campsites, all are well equipped and remote. Whilst driving
we stop at designated camp grounds such as Gunlom in the south
of Kakadu and Mardugal in the centre of Kakadu. We cannot
escape the tourist crowds here, however we do try to get away
and find our own space as much as possible. Most Campgrounds
have flushing toilets and shower facilities. Some tours
will be focused on basic 'bush camps’.
How Far, How Long and When?
Typically, a 3 day 4WD trip
can cover up to 1000km of sealed and dirt roads. The River
tour will encompass upto 50km of gentle paddling (or 15-18km
per day).
Tours operate May to October
(weather permitting for areas such as the River, Gunlom &
Koolpin). The temperature ranges from 24 C to 39 C, but the
nights from June to August can be cool, dropping to 8 degrees
Celsius. We do tour year round, however itineraries are made
to be versatile and include different options which embrace
the different climactic conditions of the tropical north.
Tour accommodation:
Option 2: A
mix of Tented (Twin Share)
+ Accommodation
- Katherine
accommodation is Motel and/or Country Lodge standard. This

mix of Tented (Twin Share)

Wet Season Itinerary -
depends upon seasonal conditions and tour operator's discretion
- generally December to April:
Using top quality equipment
and qualified, accredited guides, this trip covers up to 55
kilometres of river and approximately 1200 kilometres of road.
Fed by Lake Argyle and the Argyle Dam all year, the river
winds through rocky escarpment that will show its true colours
on sunset. Wildlife encounters, comfortable 'swag style' camping,
great dining, fantastic service, - it all adds up to being
a unique experience. A trip you may never forget.
1 -L,D, Accommodated - You
will be met at your Katherine accommodation at 7:00 am (0700).
From here you will journey along the Stuart Highway to Katherine
and then turn onto the Victoria Highway to Western Australia
to view the mighty Victoria River which originates on Riveren
Station and travels approximately 720 kilometres through a
mixture of grassy plains, rolling savannas, rocky spinifex
country, mesas and plateau before draining into the Joseph
Bonaparte Gulf and ultimately the Timor Sea to the north.
Most of the catchment lies less than 450 metres above sea
level. After another short drive, you will be able to stretch
your legs at Gregory's Tree which is located 15km northwest
of Timber Creek. This large boab tree stands at the campsite
of the early explorer Augustus Charles Gregory's North Australian
Expedition which was undertaken between October 1855 and July
1856. Inscribed in the tree by Gregory are the expedition
dates. The tree also has special significance to the local
Ngaringman Aboriginal people and is registered as a sacred
site. After a short trip into Kununurra to grab some fresh
supplies (no fruit & veg can be taken over the WA border),
we travel back to the Lake Argyle Tourist Village. Here we
will unpack and prepare for our canoeing adventure on the
Ord River. Overlooking the spectacular Lake Argyle, you will
be able to relax and watch the sun go down, shedding its light
on the stunning red escarpment of the Carr Boyd Ranges whilst
enjoying some nibbles and your favourite glass of wine.
Day 2 - B,L,D, Camping - After
a hearty cooked breakfast it is time to gather up all belongings
and head to the base of the Argyle Dam. Here you will be fitted
with Personal Flotation Devices (PFD) a requirement, to be
worn whilst on the river. A safety brief and paddling instructions
for kayaking and canoeing will be given before entering the
water. At a relaxing rate, there will be stops along the river
for a morning break, lunch and time to view the diverse river
environment, bird and wildlife. This is probably the narrowest
section of the river that you will paddle on. The escarpment
is high, the water is still flowing from the dam and the trees
provide a nice amount of shade. A fairly easy start to 3 days
on the river. Approximately 4 pm (1600) you will step ashore
for an overnight camping experience. There will be time to
relax; fish or read all whilst your guide prepares the evening
meal. After a fulfilling meal, enjoyed with your favourite
bottle of wine or spirit, retire into your tent in a bed-roll
under the live Tropical stormy sky or clearing to reveal blanket
of stars.
Day 3 - B,L,D Accommodated
- After a hearty cooked breakfast, we pack-up camp and continue
paddling down-stream. Carlton Gorge will be a highlight of
the day as you paddle through seeing small rock wallabies
watching you from ledges high above. We will be met on the
river, just before it widens through the 'agricultural belt'
by a cruise boat, which will allow time to sit back while
we glide along and have the local experts interpret some more
of the regions wonderful natural and colourful pioneering
history. Late in the afternoon we will enjoy dinner, before
heading back along the Victoria Highway to our accommodated
stay at the Victoria River Roadhouse
Day 4- An early morning start
so we will arrive back in Katherine.
