But what is a true backpacker?

What is a backpacker? In the past a typical backpacker would be someone who hikes into the wilderness or mountainous regions to spend one or more nights there exploring that particular region, taking all the suppliers needed. A backpacker would pack all of her or his gear into their canvas backpack and hike for around 5-8 hours a day.

Then came the 1970's and the new generation of the backpacker emerged. More elaborate backpacks that carried up to 35kl and this new breed ventured into Europe and Asia usually teaming up in groups of 4-5 and staying each night in hostels and moving by bus and train during the day with a budget of an amazing $10 a day. Then in the 1980's new hostels were built and the backpacker discovered Australia and New Zealand and America as their next destination for adventure and travel and the budget slowly increased to $50 a day.

Myself a twice around the world backpacker and then as flashpacker to eventually managing 2 backpackers resorts some years ago. The freedom of being a backpacker is quite unique and the bonding of the group is rather spiritual at times. No not the rum and coke spirits but the companionship side of it. Backpacking really lets one find themselves. In tours - well again the industry has changed from backpacker tours to medium eco friendly with minimal camping facility tours designed for the 18-39's who are young and adventurous.
