TUESDAY - ITINERARY
ODYSSEY TOURS & SAFARIS
This first class
safari is much more than a sightseeing tour, it
is an experience of the cultural landscape known
as Kakadu National Park. Tours are guided by our
experienced professional guides with major emphasis
on interpretation of the ecology, aboriginal rock
art as well as just plain having fun. On safari
your accommodation is in our purpose built “Safari
Tents”. They are locally designed for our tropical
climate. The floors are made of wood and are raised
above the ground, with plenty of room to stand
up. You’ll enjoy the comfort of this spacious
cool design. Each tent has 2 standard size single
beds with mattresses, linen, blankets, pillow
and towel. Each camping area is serviced with
hot showers and flushing toilets. In the evenings
your Camp Host will serve sumptuous candle lit
dinners. Vegetarian and other diets are catered
for, but be sure to let us know your requirements
when booking.
DAY 1 Depart
Darwin around 0700 hours and travel down "The
Track" (Stuart Highway) to Humpty Doo. And travel
across the Marrakai Plains, Adelaide, Mary and
South Alligator rivers and on into Kakadu National
Park. We then head across the Jabiluka floodplains
to Ubirr to view the Aboriginal rock art spanning
23,000 years of seasonal occupation. The view
from the top of the rock is magnificent. After
lunch we travel south to Cooinda, we’ll visit
the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre,
an impressive building built in the shape of the
local Pig Nosed turtle. Here you will learn about
the traditional Aboriginal owners of the park,
their culture, beliefs and lifestyles. From Warradjan
we visit the world renowned Yellow Water wetlands.
Here we enjoy a spectacular sunset cruise,
with the opportunity to view the myriad birdlife
and perhaps the awesome saltwater crocodile, plus
a magnificent Top End sunset. This evening’s camp
is at nearby Mardugal Billabong.
DAY 2 This
morning we visit another of Kakadu’s famous rock
art sites at Burrungui (Nourlangie Rock).
Your guide will explain the stories and mythology
relating to these ancient ochre paintings. Next
we travel south along the Arnhem Escarpment to
Maguk (Barramundi Gorge). Here we have
the opportunity to explore the surrounding monsoon
rainforest and take a swim in the beautiful plunge
pool. From Maguk we continue into the southern
reaches of the park and our safari camp at Gunlom.
Your Camp Host will amaze you with a delicious
evening meal cooked on the open fire. Dinner is
a candle lit affair, sitting out under the southern
sky.
DAY 3 This
morning you have the chance to put on your walking
shoes and take an energetic climb to the top of
the escarpment to enjoy the breathtaking views
of the South Alligator Valley. There is also the
opportunity for a refreshing swim in the plunge
pool at the base of these beautiful falls. Next
we break camp and travel on to the gold mining
township of Pine Creek, along the way stopping
for lunch. Turning north, we head to Adelaide
River where we stop briefly at the Adelaide River
War Cemetery. Then it’s on to Darwin arriving
at your accommodation around 17:00-17:30.
