CLASSIC
COAST - 3 ½ days / 3 nights -
Adelaide to Melbourne
Wayward unravels all 1200k's
of breathtaking coastline between Melbourne and Adelaide,
with much more than just a few icon stops. Our 3.5 day schedule
is a big advantage. For instance, the day we cover Port Campbell
National Park, we not only avoid the crowds, but we score
the midday warmth - a real asset down on the beach in Loch
Ard Gorge and for getting the best bright photos of the coves
and 12 Apostles (it can be 'challenging' facing the Southern
Ocean weather early or late in the day when most travellers
are there). We only drive an easy 220km on this day. |

Wayward
is the original tour between Melbourne and Adelaide via
the Great Ocean Road. We've now been running the Classic
Coast for over 16 years!
Our 3 overnight stops are Apollo Bay, Port Fairy and Robe.
They are all cute little port towns and villages dating
from the 1830s and boasting plenty of colonial charm. Our
hostel-style accoms in Robe and Port Fairy are actually
19th Century grand manors and homes. Both are YHAs.
Travellers have a choice of youth hostel share style accommodation
or 3-4 star rooms in nearby motels.
With just the right amount of flexibility and good information,
the Classic Coast with Wayward Bus is a favourite of independent
travellers. Find out why so many of our friends come back
for a second or third dose of the 'Classic Coast'...

ITINERARY:
Adelaide
to Melbourne:
Day
1 - Adelaide to Robe
Dune climbing & indigenous culture! We drive through the
scenic Adelaide Hills and expansive vineyards of Langhorne
Creek. See views of Lakes Alexandrina and Albert then take
a Murray River crossing by ferry.
Local Aboriginal people run the Coorong Wilderness Lodge,
it’s at the end of a bumpy track and enjoys terrific water
views. Our hosts offer a ‘Bush Foods and Medicines’ walk
and prepare lunch ($15 kitty), often featuring native foods.
(If you’d like to stay over a few days, accom, meals, walks
and guided kayaking are available).
A seldom used dirt road takes us deep into Coorong National
Park amongst the sand dunes, lakes, tea tree groves and
wildlife. Lose your shoes for a hike up the dunes.
Stroll Long Beach and jump up onto the Granites - rock formations
resembling whales. ‘Larry’, one of Australia’s finest fibreglass
creations rears up outside Kingston. Robe is the favourite
seaside town for the South-East of SA, dating from the 1840s
with plenty of Georgian era architecture.
Accom: Overnight in Robe at Robe Backpackers (the transformed
mid-1800s Lakeside Countryhouse historic mansion!) or upgrade
to Guichen Bay motel or similar
Day
2 - Robe to Port Fairy (B)
And the road rolls on… whales, seals & volcanoes.
Enjoy a cliff-top walk along the craggy coastline of Canunda
National Park. Beachport on Rivoli Bay is another charming
fishing village. Ponds, caves and underground rivers honeycomb
the Mt Gambier region - the Blue Lake is a complete surprise!
Walk down into Umpherstone Cave – the biggest sinkhole about.
The regional city of Mt. Gambier has several cafes handy
for some lunch. Nelson on the Glenelg River is a top spot.
We visit the wild and spectacular Bridgewater Bay. A local,
Joe, runs a zippy zodiac boat to seal colonies under the
Cape, a total adventure for about $23pp (weather permitting).
Our overnight at Port Fairy is another colonial time warp.
Accom: YHA Hostel (another grand home, built in the 1840s),
Central Motel or similar.
Day
3 - Port Fairy to Apollo Bay (B)
The Great Ocean Road works!
The morning explores Tower Hill – where koalas, kangaroos
and emus roam free. At Logan’s Beach, we watch for whales
(May-Oct), then Bay of Martyrs, Bay of Islands, London Bridge
and the ‘Tolkienesque’ Grotto. We stop at Port Campbell
for lunch (choice of tasty cafes, bakery and pub!) followed
by Loch Ard Gorge which has walks, lookouts, beaches, coves,
caves and awesome photo opportunities. One shipwreck further
is Australia’s most famous rock group, the 12 Apostles.
Our late afternoon explores the Otway Ranges. A favourite
is Melba Gully, where a walk leads through lush myrtle-beech
rainforest to river cascades and a massive Otway Messmate
tree. Apollo Bay, our night’s stopover is small and remote.
The ‘Bay’ is vibrant, and blends a sprinkle of ‘hippy’ with
the feel of a real country town.
Accom: private hostel or upgrade to Coastal Motel or similar.
Day
4 - Apollo Bay to Melbourne (B)
We hug the wild and steep coastline from Apollo Bay, travelling
the spectacular ‘twisty-snaky’ leg of the Great Ocean Road
for a unique coastal drive with lookout stops. Lorne is
a classic seaside resort nestled between mountains and sea.
Next stop is Bell’s Beach, the world famous surf spot. We
arrive into Melbourne by midday.

Port Fairy and Apollo Bay. All have a strong sense of history
and colonial charm - and all have extensive beaches - perfect
for a swim, walk, or jog. And what's left over? dairy farms,
sheep country, vineyards, pine forests - plus travellers

Are
possible if you like to stay anywhere along the route, eg:
to do the Great South West Coast Walk between Portland and
Nelson (up to 120km), canoe touring on the Glenelg River,

Upgrade
Accommodation
Our
regular properties are mentioned above in the day by day
itinerary. At times we may use other hotels, motels and
B&Bs with standards ranging from 3 to 4 star. Holiday periods
and weekends can affect availability for private rooms (book
earlier) but hostel accom is always available for our travellers.
Accommodations used are not far apart in the overnight towns
and we drop off, introduce you to your hosts and then pick
you up in the mornings.
|
General
Back in 2000 we added an extra half day - and a night in Apollo
Bay - increasing our Great Ocean Road time substantially.
This has another advantage: 3.5 days keeps us 'out of step'
both ways with the crowds that surge around the coast from
Melbourne each morning. At the Melbourne start of the tour,
you have a free morning before our 1.30pm departure - or if
coming from Adelaide, a 12.00 noon midday finish into Melbourne. |
